Winter in Squamish

Published on

There’s no lying, Squamish in winter used to only be seen as the ‘stop off’ on the way to Whistler, but that has all changed.

Winter in Squamish is a season to be celebrated with tons of activities and adventure to be had. Whether you live here or are just visiting, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Eagle watching

Brackendale is home to one of North America’s largest gatherings of winter-nesting bald eagles. It is a bird watchers paradise.

Peak eagle viewing takes place from mid-December to mid-January. For the best views, book yourself an eagle viewing float tour.

Farmer’s market

Beginning on November 14th and taking place every alternate Saturday, the winter market is one not to be missed.

From incredible organic produce to arts and crafts and delicious treats, there is a huge variety of things to purchase. The market is a great day out and a place to catch up with the wonderful Squamish community.

Hit the snow

Of course it wouldn’t be winter without a little snow! There are so many options in Squamish for getting your fill of the white stuff.

From backcountry skiing, to sledding, heli-skiing and snowmobiling, the mountains around Squamish have you covered. And if that wasn’t enough you can always take the short drive to Whistler, North America’s number one ski resort!

Get out on the Howe Sound

There’s nothing like enjoying a calm winter day on the water. It may be a little chilly, but winter offers some incredible views from the water.

Whether you enjoy kayaking or boating a day out on the Howe Sound should not be missed!

Ice climbing

Squamish is famous for its climbing during the warmer months. Visitors come from all over the world to try out the famous Chief and surrounding bouldering. But in winter you can also try your hand at ice climbing with various tours.

Hiking and snowshoeing

For some truly rewarding views during winter there are still plenty of hiking opportunities at lower altitudes.

And if you fancy getting a little higher, snowshoeing is an incredible experience that you should try at least once. Squamish offers a huge number of snowshoe trails in the area that really are breath-taking.
